Boney M.
Long before Milli Vanilli (and, later, Ashlee Simpson) made lip-synching scandalous and uncool, international sensations Boney M. were purveying pop-music-as-production-number via a live line-up that included a dancer, a model, and two actual singers performing German producer/mastermind Frank Farian's original disco songs. A co-ed assemblage of Jamaican and West Indian performers, the group had an infectious, island-tinged sound that delighted the dance and club crowds. Their songs--all written, produced, and sometimes even sung by Farian--topped European (but never U.S.) charts numerous times from the late 1970s to the mid '80s. The group splintered off into solo projects by the end of the '80s, but their hits collections continue to sell worldwide.
