Tripping Daisy
Comprising Tim DeLaughter (b. 18 November 1965, Dallas, Texas, USA; vocals), Wes Berggren (d. 27 October 1999, Dallas, Texas, USA; guitar), Mark Pirro (b. 1 July 1970; bass) and Bryan Wakeland (drums/percussion), Tripping Daisy were formed in Dallas, Texas, USA, in 1991. Their 1992 debut Bill produced somewhat misleading comparisons to the Smashing Pumpkins - the wistful lyrics and the pop punk construction of many of the songs lacking that band's intensity. It was reissued when the band signed a contract with Island Records. Though largely ignored in the UK and Europe, the band became a major attraction on the US college rock circuit, boosted by several appearances on MTV. Their increasing popularity was confirmed by the sales of 1995's i am an ELASTIC FIRECRACKER, which featured the single "I Got A Girl", which again secured regular showings on MTV through its innovative "Wright brothers" flying-machine video. A three-year hiatus followed before a revamped five-man line-up returned with Jesus Hits Like The Atom Bomb. The album was an artistic success, but following a slump in sales the band was dropped by Island. They released a self-titled album in early 1999, but their future was curtailed when guitarist Berggren was found dead at his Dallas home in October. DeLaughter went on to form the Polyphonic Spree.
