The Plimsouls
One of a group of bands from Los Angeles, California, USA, playing power-pop in the mid-80s, the Plimsouls comprised Peter Case (b. 5 April 1954, USA; vocals/guitar, ex-Nerves), plus Lou Ramirez (drums), Dave Pahoa (bass) and Eddie Munoz (lead guitar). Formed in 1979, they originally worked as Tone Dogs before changing names and earning a strong local live reputation. This culminated in the low-budget recording in 1980 of a debut EP, Zero Hour, on the band's own Beat Records which captured their live energy despite its lo-fi recording quality. Their love of 60s pop was more fully realized on The Plimsouls, whose vibrant pop tunes were given a clearer production. However, disappointed by record sales the band's relationship with Planet deteriorated, and they signed to Geffen Records. Again the band stayed long enough to produce only a single recording, the widely acclaimed Everywhere At Once, which included "A Million Miles Away", issued as a 12-inch single while the band were between labels. One of the album's most enduring tracks, "How Long Will It Take?', seemed to amplify the Plimsouls' long-standing role as commercial underachievers, and they broke up shortly afterwards. Case went on to a solo career while the Plimsouls" original legacy was wrapped up with the 1988 release by French label Fan Club of a 1981 live gig. The band re-formed in 1996 and recorded a new studio album, Kool Trash.
