Vicki Lawrence
b. 26 March 1949, Inglewood, California, USA. Lawrence was a well-known actress in 1973 when she recorded "The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia". Lawrence studied dance and played piano and guitar as a child. By the time she attended college she had joined folk groups, including the Young Americans. Due to her resemblance to comic actress Carol Burnett, a meeting between the two was arranged and, following an audition, Lawrence was awarded a role in Burnett's television programme which lasted from 1967-78. She married songwriter Bobby Russell in 1969. He wrote "The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia" for Lawrence and it reached the top of the US charts. Lawrence charted twice more, for Bell and Private Stock Records, but never managed to emulate her initial success. She starred in the television show Mama's Family in the early 80s.
