Although the gritty voiced Covay scored several hits on his own, he mostly made his mark as one of the most influential rock and soul songwriters of the '60s. Recording for both of the era's pre-eminent R&B labels (Atlantic and Stax), he created a body of work that had a lasting effect on everyone from Aretha Franklin to Rod Stewart.
