Dina Carroll
b. Geraldine Carroll, 21 August 1968, Newmarket, Suffolk, England. Carroll's place of birth could actually be a contentious issue bearing in mind that it took place in the back of a taxi speeding towards Newmarket Hospital. The daughter of a US serviceman and British mother, Carroll spent a few years in Philadelphia, but was largely brought up in the UK. Her soulful voice brought her to the attention of Streetsounds, where she auditioned and was rewarded with session work. She released "People All Around The World" on Jive Records in 1989 before recording a cover version of "Walk On By". In 1991, she provided vocals for Quartz's "It's Too Late" (UK number 8). Following their split, Carroll nearly abandoned the music business, but A&M Records signed her as a solo act, and in 1992 released the UK hit singles "Ain't No Man" (number 16) and "Special Kind Of Love" (number 16). Her debut album followed in 1993, with "Don't Be A Stranger" (number 3) and "The Perfect Year" (number 5) providing her with two breakthrough hits. After a three-year break she returned in 1996 with the UK number 3 single, "Escaping", and follow-up album Only Human. She enjoyed two further UK Top 20 hits, "One, Two, Three" (October 1998) and "Without Love" (July 1999).
