El Gran Silencio
Latin alternative band El Gran Silencio (the Great Silence) have dubbed their energetic and eclectic music "free-style norteno popular". The project began in Monterray, Mexico in 1992, as a means for brothers Tony Hern ndez (vocals/guitar) and Cano Hern ndez (vocals/guitar) to fuse their history in various rock bands with their love for hip-hop and norteno. The Hern ndez brothers plus "El Vulgar" Hernandez (bass), Isaac Valdez (accordion) and Ezequiel Alvarado (drums) draw on elements as disparate as punk, ska, rock, hip-hop, norteno, cumbia, pagode, ragamuffin and rumba flamenco, and utilize instruments such as the African yambe and chekere, the Colombian guacharaca and the Middle Eastern darbuka alongside those more usually found in a rock band. El Gran Silencio state they "feel like rockers" and have "a rock 'n' roll heart", acknowledging that it is rock that allows them to mix and match genres so easily.
