Lara Fabian
b. 9 January 1970, Etterbeek, Belgium. This Quebec, Canada-based singer-songwriter has established herself as a serious rival to Celine Dion in the pop diva market. Fabian, born to a Flemish father and a Sicilian mother, grew up in a musical household, and her guitar-playing father accompanied his teenage daughter when she first began performing in Brussels' boŒtes … chanson. At the age of 18 Fabian represented Luxembourg in the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest, finishing a highly credible fourth. The song she performed, "Croire", became a minor hit when it was subsequently released on the Tr‚ma label. Fabian relocated to Quebec in 1991 in an attempt to establish a singing career in North America. Her self-titled debut, which had been recorded back in Belgium, was released that August. The album took off in Quebec, as did the 1994 follow-up Carpe Diem, but her big break came two years later when she was featured on the soundtrack to Walt Disney's animated feature, The Hunchback Of Notre Dame. Her third album Pure was nominated for two Juno Awards and rapidly achieved multi-platinum status. Fabian's phenomenal commercial success in the French-speaking market, coupled with Dion's "retirement" from music, led to an inevitable attempt to woo the US charts. Her English-language debut, recorded in New York City and San Francisco, was released by Sony Music in summer 2000. One of the tracks, "I Will Love Again", had already topped the US dance music charts.
