Bonnie "Prince" Billy
One of numerous recording monikers employed by lo-fi maverick Will Oldham (b. 24 December 1970, Louisville, Kentucky, USA), Bonnie "Prince" Billy became the artist's favoured voice during the late 90s and into the new millennium. Oldham introduced Bonnie "Prince' Billy on 1998"s tour single, "I Am Drinking Again". The limited edition 7-inch single "Black Dissimulation" followed later in the year, credited to Bonnie Prince Billie. The following year's long-playing debut, I See A Darkness, was released via Drag City Records, the Chicago-based independent that had distributed the earlier Palace Brothers and Palace recordings. The album was hailed as one of Oldham's finest releases, drawing on the Appalachian gothic registers of his earlier work while embellishing the songs with discreet brushes of additional instrumentation. The closing track "Raining In Darling" was Oldham's most optimistic piece of songwriting in a long time.
