Gorefest
Formed in 1989, Dutch band Gorefest managed to carve a niche for themselves in an increasingly overcrowded death metal genre, making their debut on the underground demo scene with two tapes, Tangled In Gore and Horrors In A Retarded Mind. After Mindloss, they secured a contract with Nuclear Blast Records and released False. Gorefest's material was morbidly metaphysical, and at their best they managed to combine melodic and inventive riffs with an abrasive edge. A popular live band, they released a recording of their performance at 1993's Dynamo Open Air Festival as The Eindhoven Insanity, which some argue was the first ever live death metal album. The 1994 studio album Erase represented their most confident outing, and featured the line up of Jan-Chris De Koeijer (b. 20 October 1966, Netherlands; vocals/bass), Frank Harthoorn (b. Goes, Netherlands; rhythm guitar), Boudewijn Vincent Bonebakker (b. 16 April 1968, Goes, Netherlands; guitar) and Ed Warby (b. 7 March 1968, Rotterdam, Netherlands; drums). The band broke up in 1998 but were back together in 2004. The same quartet continue with a loyal fan base and regular tours.
