DAF
This German band, based in Dusseldorf, specialized in minimalist electro-dance music, epitomised by their big dancefloor hit "Der Mussolini". The initials stood for Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft, a term first invoked on local posters to symbolise post-war American-German friendship, and the line-up comprised Robert Grl (drums, synthesizer), Michael Kehmer (bass), Chrislo Hass (saxophone, synthesizer, bass), and Gabi Delgado-Lopez (vocals). Die Kleinen Und Die Bsen was their first album available in the UK because Produkt had only been available in Germany. Die Kleinen (the title translates as The Small And The Evil) was released on the Mute Records label in 1980. Recorded in London, the album was uneven and is generally considered as unrepresentative, dominated by "songs" whose heritage combined Pink Flag-era Wire and Can influences. Afterwards Grl and Delgado-Lopez continued as a duo (Haas would later join Crime And The City Solution), recording three acclaimed albums for Virgin Records in an 18-month period. These comprised a mixture of Teutonic fantasy, love songs, and social statements. Delgado-Lopez's refusal to sing in English condemned them to a minority international market. Contrary to their dour image, there was much to admire in the exemplary pop of singles such as "Verlieb Dich In Mich". Indeed, in 1981 they guested on the Eurythmics first album, In The Garden. Later Annie Lennox would return the compliment by adding vocals to Gorl's solo "Darling Don't Leave Me" single and several tracks on the accompanying album. Grl and Delgado-Lopez re-formed in 1986 to record an out-and-out dance album, before returning to solo projects.
