Chris and Cosey
Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti (b. Christine Newby) became partners while with late 70s "industrial" sound pioneers Throbbing Gristle. When the latter split in 1981, the couple decided to operate both as Chris And Cosey and as CTI (Creative Technology Institute). Their debut album, Heartbeat, credited to CTI, drew from Throbbing Gristle's rhythmic undercurrents, but the pair's next collection, Trance, was soured by a disagreement with Rough Trade Records over its selling price. 1983 yielded two singles, the Japanese-only "Nikki" (a collaboration with John Duncan) and the relatively mainstream "October (Love Song)". These were followed in 1984 by Songs Of Love And Lust. That year the duo also issued Elemental 7 in collaboration with John Lacey on Cabaret Voltaire's Doublevision label and further projects, as CTI, with Lustmord's Brian Williams and Glenn Wallis of Konstructivitis. These projects were also accompanied by European Rendezvous. Mondo Beat, released in 1985, was originally conceived by Carter as a 12-inch single, but expanded beyond that format. By this time, the pair's relationship with Rough Trade had become strained and they left after Techno Primitiv and "Sweet Surprise", a project with the Eurythmics. They then joined Vancouver label Nettwerk Productions, while in Europe they were handled by renowned Brussels label Play It Again Sam (who have also reissued much of their product). After that, Chris And Cosey gradually steered towards the "new beat" dance sound, with singles such as "Obsession", "Exotica" (both 1987) and "Rise" (1989). The early 90s albums Reflection and Pagan Tango confirmed their adoption of hi-tech dance music.
