23 Skidoo
Post-punk experimentalists who, alongside other industrial acts such as Cabaret Voltaire, A Certain Ratio and Throbbing Gristle did much to influence the course of UK dance music. Taking their name from an Aleister Crowley reference, the group was formed in London, England in 1979 by Fritz Catlin (b. Fritz Haaman; drums/percussion) and brothers Alex Turnbull (percussion) and Johnny Turnbull (guitar). Their debut single, "Ethics", was released on the Pineapple label and featured additional members Tom Heslop (vocals) and Sam Mills (guitar). The same line-up decamped to Cabaret Voltaire's Western Works studio to record "Last Words"/"The Gospel Comes To New Guinea' and the Seven Songs mini-album, that somewhat confusingly featured eight tracks. Psychic TV and Current 93"s David Tibet joined the founding trio on the following year's The Culling Is Coming, an album of ritual music on which the band's percussion-based grooves and eastern leanings came to the fore.
