Speedy J
b. Jochem Paap, Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Speedy J is a successful solo artist who started DJing in the early 80s and earned his nickname through his fast mixing and scratching technique. After picking up the house bug from America, he began to record his own hard house material; his first efforts "Lift Off" and "Take Me There" came out on a 12-inch compilation on Hithouse Records. He then became the first European act to sign to Ritchie Hawtin's label Plus 8 Records which released two EPs including Intercontinental. At the same time he also produced work for the labels Evolution, Stealth and R&S Records (as Tune). A track on the 1991 Plus 8 compilation From Our Minds To Yours Volume 1, "Pull Over", might have proved just another footnote had it not been picked up by the rave scene and released by Music Man Records, and it subsequently became his best known record to that point. His third EP for Plus 8, Rise, featured another big club hit, "Something For Your Mind". However Paap was beginning to become stereotyped as a conventional house operator where his vision was originally broader. Consequently he developed the Public Energy pseudonym for such material and began recording more divergent, experimental work as Speedy J.
