John Fedchock
b. John William Fedchock, 18 September 1957, Cleveland, Ohio, USA. From the mid-70s into the mid-80s, Fedchock studied trombone and arranging extensively, both at university and privately. Overlapping his studies, he played trombone with and also wrote arrangements for Woody Herman during most of the 80s, for part of this time acting as the band's musical director. Towards the end of this decade, he was also with Gerry Mulligan and Louie Bellson. He was also co-leader with Maria Schneider of a big band and subsequently formed his own large ensemble, the New York Big Band. In this band, Fedchock uses a combination of experienced New York session musicians and forward-thinking jazz players. The results of this combination of musical talents, directed at performing the leader's skilful and frequently demanding charts, has been one of the best latter-day big bands. As a player, Fedchock's technical expertise allows him to bring to fruition all of his musical imaginings, including the small group session on Hit The Bricks.
