David Sanchez
b. 3 September 1968, Hato Rey, Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. Starting out as a percussionist in a Latin band with his brother, Sanchez took up the saxophone at the age of 12. By the time he was 15 he had begun taking the tenor saxophone more seriously and was also hearing jazz, on record, and liking it. He listened to Miles Davis, Dexter Gordon and Sonny Rollins. When Sanchez was 16 he visited New York on holiday, buying more records, and eventually reached a standard in his own playing to allow him to join Kenny Burrell's quartet. From there he moved to Dizzy Gillespie's small group, then his big band.
