Supreme Beings of Leisure
This US outfit released their self-titled debut album in 2000, by which point the four members had been playing together for over five years. Originally based in Los Angeles, Rick Torres (guitar), Kiran Shahani (bass) and Ramin Sakurai (keyboards) began recording together as Oversoul 7, but changed their name in 1995 to Supreme Beings Of Leisure after teaming up with vocalist Geri Soriano-Lightwood. The quartet's demo versions of two tracks, "What's The Deal" and "Nothing Like Tomorrow", were featured on two Moonshine Records compilations, but they eventually landed a recording contract with Chris Blackwell's new label, Palm Pictures. The quartet's self-titled debut earned them inevitable comparisons to UK acts such as Massive Attack and Morcheeba, with its fusion of soulful vocals, chilled out trip-hop beats and traditional pop/rock structures.
