Pylon
The best-known bands to emerge from the early 80s Athens, Georgia, USA scene were the B-52's and R.E.M., but among the several other acts from the city who achieved local success Pylon enjoy an ongoing cult reputation. While some bands set lofty goals early on, Pylon's approach was almost the complete opposite. During the late 70s, University of Georgia art students Randy Bewley (guitar) and Michael Lachowski (bass) had been reading about New York City's punk movement. For the fun of it, they hatched a plan that they would form a band, play a show in New York City, and then break up as soon as a review ran in their favourite publication, New York Rocker. The noise from rehearsals intrigued a few fellow college students who lived in the same building, and soon after, Curtis Crowe was welcomed onboard as the fledgling unit's drummer. Another University of Georgia student and acquaintance of the trio, Vanessa Briscoe, was welcomed as their singer, and during early 1979, Pylon was officially formed. Instead of following their original plan, Pylon entered the recording studio, and issued two recordings for the dB label, 1980's Gyrate and 1983's Chomp.
