Wicked
This musical show explores new strata of the fertile ground first tilled many years ago by Frank L. Baum with his tales of Dorothy in The Wizard Of Oz. This particular story is based directly upon Gregory Maguire's novel, Wicked: The Life And Times Of The Wicked Witch Of The West, which traces the early life of Elphaba, who grew up to be the decidedly unpleasant green-faced witch. The book for the musical is by Winnie Holzman, music and lyrics are by Stephen Schwartz. The show opened at New York's George Gershwin Theatre on 30 October 2003 and continued running throughout 2006. Directed by Joe Mantello, the show's choreography was by Wayne Cilento and the musical director was Stephen Oremus. The cast included Idina Menzel (as Elphaba), Kristin Chenoweth (Glinda, the "good' witch"), and Joel Grey (The Wonderful Wizard of Oz). Other leading cast members during the show's run were Michelle Federer (Nessarose), Christopher Fitzgerald (Boq), and Carole Shelley (Madame Morrible). Among songs in the show are "I'm Not That Girl", "The Wizard And I", "No Good Deed", "No One Mourns The Wicked", "Popular", "One Short Day", "Defying Gravity", "For Good", "A Sentimental Man" and "Wonderful".
