Youth Of Today
Highly influential leaders of the late 80s US straight edge hardcore revival, Youth Of Today were born out of charismatic vocalist Ray "Ray 2 Day" Cappo's desire to spread the straight edge ideal at a time when most hard punk bands were resolutely opposed to the idea or were "going metal". Together with long time collaborator John Porcell, the pair ditched their former band Violent Children and re-grouped with members of Porcell's side-project, Young Republicans to form Youth Of Today in 1985. Influenced by straight edge innovators Minor Threat, and other similarly inclined units; 7 Seconds, Youth Brigade and SSDecontrol, the band played locally around their native Connecticut before releasing the raging Can't Close My Eyes EP. A fairly primitive affair, it did however capture the band's raw energy and Cappo's finger-pointing invective. It also succeeded in re-igniting interest in the movement, enabling the band to tour nationally - one of the first hardcore outfits to do so.
