Mr. Oizo
b. Quentin Dupieux, France. The artist's moniker Mr. Oizo was obscured by that of a puppet, Flat Eric, an orange anthropomorph that featured in UK television commercials for Levis jeans, dancing to Dupieux's track "Flat Beat". The adverts, the puppet and the track became simultaneously popular and "Flat Beat" was extensively play-listed on UK national radio, ultimately reaching number 1 in March 1999. The puppet's appearance in the accompanying video confirmed Flat Eric's place in the popular consciousness as the creator of the track, rather than Dupieux/Mr. Oizo. Dupieux had already released two EPs on Laurent Garnier's F Communications label, but the success of "Flat Beat" raised his profile enormously before the release of his debut Analog Worms Attack in October 1999. Dupieux claims Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis as major influences, and he adopts a similarly experimental and abstract approach to his style of dance music, which has been described as "dirty house" - stripped-down, using quirky and distorted sounds and "acid" basslines - a style reminiscent of Garnier.
