Beatsteaks
The punk pop movement of the late 90s/early twenty-first century was largely US-based, but several similarly styled outfits also enjoyed commercial success, such as the German quintet, Beatsteaks. Originally formed by Arnim Teutoburg-Weiss (vocals/guitar), Peter Baumann (guitar/vocals), Alexander Rosswaag (bass), Bernd Kurtzke (guitar) and Stefan Hircher (drums) during the summer of 1995 in Berlin, Germany (while its members were still in high school), the band issued their first demo Beatsteaks Die Erste, the same year. Beatsteaks immediately built a following, as the demo sold over a thousand copies in a three-month span, which led to opening for the reunited Sex Pistols in Berlin (the result of winning a competition). Beatsteaks' debut, 48/49, was issued in February 1997, which led to further supporting gigs, opening for Faith No More, Dog Eat Dog, and Lagwagon. After a bit of line-up juggling, with Hircher replaced by Thomas G”tz, Beatsteaks signed a stateside recording contract with Epitaph Records, and issued their follow-up, 2000's Launched. Further line-up changes saw Rosswaag replaced by Torsten Scholz, with the new bass player making his debut on the European version of the Warped Tour. Beatsteaks then returned to the studio with ex-Faith No More bass player Bill Gould producing. Living Targets followed in 2002.
