Adalberto Alvarez
b. 1948, Havana, Cuba. Afro-Cuban composer, arranger, bandleader and pianist Alvarez has written many wonderful songs that have been interpreted by major international salsa artists and bands, including Ismael Quintana, Charanga Amrica, Justo Betancourt, Roberto Roena, Papo Lucca and Sonora Ponce¤a, Oscar D'Le¢n, Willie Rosario, Louie Ram¡rez, Ray De La Paz and Gilberto Santa Rosa. Alvarez grew up in Camagey and attended the National School of Music of Camagey. He played in his father's dance band and arranged for various prestigious units, such as Orquesta Rumbavana. Alvarez organized and led the band Son 14, who interpreted ". . . the son with a refreshing modern style producing a sound which (was) clean, tight, smooth, earthy and funky . . . combined with perfect excellent arrangements . . .' (quote from John Santos" sleeve-note to Ambassadors Of Son). After several albums with Son 14, Adalberto formed his own band called Son.
