Mark Turner
b. 10 November 1965, Fairborn, Ohio, USA. Raised in Southern California, Turner abandoned plans for a career as a commercial artist when he discovered a love for music. He studied alto saxophone before switching to tenor and from 1987 attended Berklee College Of Music. After graduating in 1990, Turner went to New York where he began attracting attention through gigs with musicians such as Terence Blanchard, Dave Douglas, Charlie Haden, Slide Hampton, Tom Harrell, Brad Mehldau and Kurt Rosenwinkel, having met the latter at Berklee. Turner has also recorded with Jimmy Smith, TanaReid and Jonny King. At the end of the 90s, Turner's name was beginning to enjoy wider recognition owing to international work and an appearance at the 1999 Newport Jazz Festival at sea on the QE2. Eschewing the flamboyance some tenor saxophonists of his generation bring to their performances, Turner's playing style is notable for being unaffected. To his ballad playing, he brings seemingly effortless control and a deep sense of the mood of the music that never descends into theatricality. In addition to his work as a performer, Turner also teaches privately and at the Manhattan School of Music.
