Cornelio Reyna
b. 16 September 1940, Saltillo, Mexico, d. 22 January 1997, Mexico City, Mexico. Viewed by many as the godfather of norteno/conjunto music (Tex-Mex, in the American idiom), Reyna wrote some of the genre's greatest hits, such as "Mil Noches", "Callej¢n Sin Slida", "Me Cai De La Nube" and "Hay Ojitos". He began his musical career at the age of 16, singing, writing and playing the bajo sexto (12-string guitar). In 1960 he formed Los Relampagos Del Norte, alongside another legend of conjunto music, Ramon Ayala. The duo performed together musically thousands of times and became the premier conjunto attraction along the US/Mexican border. They recorded over 20 albums for the Bego and Falcon labels, their biggest hits including "Un Dia Con Otro", "Sufriendo Penas" and "T‚ Traigo Estas Flores". The duo eventually ended their relationship in 1973, with each partner going on to enjoy further success as a solo artist - though they also occasionally reunited for duet concerts. Among Reyna's most notable subsequent successes was "Si T£ Supieras', which he wrote for the group La Mafia. He also recorded that song as a duet with the group. Between 1973 and 1996 he released over a dozen solo albums, including one reunion set with Ayala, 1995"s Juntos Para Siempre. He died in 1997 from complications arising from a ruptured ulcer.
