Dario G
Paul Spencer (b. Crewe, Cheshire, England) and Scott Rosser (b. Llanelli, Wales) first met on a Pop Music And Recording course at Manchester's Salford College in 1989. After graduating the duo recorded several limited edition singles that found favour on the underground house music scene. In 1996, they teamed up with Paul Stephen Spencer, who used his contacts in the dance music industry to gain the newly titled Dario G (named after Dario Gradi, the manager of football team Crewe Alexandra) a recording contract with Warner Brothers Records' dance imprint, Eternal. Their first single "Sunchyme", which was based around a sample from Dream Academy's 1985 hit "Life In A Northern Town", became one of the biggest radio hits of 1997, climbing to number 2 in the UK charts in September, and selling over two million copies in Europe. The single, which was later nominated for an Ivor Novello award, was prevented from topping the charts in many countries by Elton John's all-conquering "Candle In The Wind 97". The UK Top 5 follow-up, "Carnaval De Paris", was adopted as the soccer world cup's theme tune in Europe. David Bowie and Tony Visconti contributed to the third single "Sunmachine", that gave its name to the trio's debut album. The peace and love vibe that permeated Sunmachine harked back to the heady days of the acid house scene, and was accentuated by the music's eclectic fusion of mandolins, bagpipes, steel bands, Spanish guitar, Latin percussion, Bolivian panpipes and gospel choirs. "Voices", with Vanessa Quinones on vocals, was featured on the soundtrack of The Beach.
