Seam
Seam were formed in Chicago, Illinois, USA, by singer/guitarist Sooyoung Park, who had formerly led local punk act Bitch Magnet. The original line-up, which convened in 1990 for the release of the band's debut 7-inch single "Days Of Thunder", also included Ralph "Mac" McCaughan of Superchunk and bass player Lexi Mitchell. Since their inception the membership of the band has been fluid, although Park has always remained Seam's principal songwriter. In the process the band have evolved a musical style which some critics have dubbed "slowcore" - a marriage of reflective acoustic passages with raucous noise inserts approximating the abrasiveness of local legends Big Black. This has led to comparisons with Slint (produced by Big Black alumnus Steve Albini) and Codeine's bass-dominated sound. After Are You Driving Me Crazy? Park took the band on the Ear Of The Dragon tour, to draw attention to the underexposed Asian influence in alternative music. At the same time the band turned down a series of major label offers following the modest success of their third album. By 1998 and The Pace Is Glacial, Seam had acquired a more stable line-up with William Shin on bass, guitarist Reg Shrader and drummer Chris Manfrin joining Park.
