Frankie Ruiz
b. Jose Antonio Terresola Ruiz, 10 March 1958, Paterson, New Jersey, USA, d. 9 August 1998, Newark, New Jersey, USA. Mercurial salsa star Frankie Ruiz is condemned to be remembered as much for his wanton lifestyle and descent into self-destruction as his beguiling tenor voice and emphatic performances. As a teenager Ruiz moved to Puerto Rico and eventually became vocalist with Orquesta La Soluci¢n. He moved on to the Tommy Olivencia orchestra before going solo in 1980, releasing a series of records for TH-Rodven Records. Most closely associated with the salsa rom ntica movement of the late 80s, his string of hits included "Voy Pa' Encima", "Mi Libertad", "Desn£date Mujer" and "Ironia". His signature phrase was "Vaya, mi China!" ("Go, Baby!"). However, these successes were intercut with periods of drug and alcohol absentia, and a three-year jail sentence in Jacksonsville, Texas, for assaulting a flight attendant. He was recording a new album for Rodven/PolyGram Latino (Nacimiento Y Recuerdos) before the struggle to extricate himself from alcohol and drugs was lost. He eventually died of liver cirrhosis a month after his final concert on 11 July 1998 at Madison Square Garden.
