The Make-Up
Comprising Ian Svenonius (vocals), James Canty (guitar/organ/vocals), Michelle Mae (bass/vocals, ex-Frumpies) and Steve Gamboa (drums), Washington DC, USA alternative rock band Make-Up formed from the ashes of the highly regarded local hardcore outfit Nation Of Ulysses, and the short-lived follow-up Cupid Car Club. All three male members of Make-Up had been in the controversial, highly politicized Nation Of Ulysses, and many of their political aspirations were carried over to the new band - albeit with a more vaudevillian twist, delivered in a frantic wail by self-styled "preacher" Svenonius. Their 1996 debut album, Destination: Love Live! At Cold Rice, was recorded "live" at a DC venue and featured "16 items, 13 of which are songs". The other three "items" were pieces of oratory grandly introducing the band's membership - recalling the highly charged melodrama of their stage shows. This was captured on the following year's genuine live set, After Dark, which was recorded in London. Subsequent albums evoked comparisons to James Brown, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and Rocket From The Crypt - the latter band having originally been heavily influenced by Nation Of Ulysses. I Want Some was an exhaustive trawl through the band's singles discography. After Make-Up ground to a halt at the start of the new millennium, Svenonius and Mae played in Weird War with Royal Trux's Neil Hagerty before forming the Scene Creamers.
