Echobelly
This UK indie pop band was formed in 1992 by the Anglo-Asian singer Sonya Aurora Madan, along with Glenn Johansson (b. Sweden; guitar), Debbie Smith (guitar, ex-Curve), Andy Henderson (drums) and Alex Keyser (bass). Echobelly were put together when Madan met Johansson at a gig. After breaking the UK Top 40 in 1994 with the momentous "I Can't Imagine The World Without Me", the band became the darlings of the British music press. The original, rejected title of their debut album was taken from a Suffragette's reply when asked when women would obtain the vote: "Today, Tomorrow, Sometime, Never", leading Madan to comment: "I feel led by similar frustrations, politically and morally, encompassing feminism and gender. Things are made much more obvious coming from a coloured background." This last point was made clear by her Union Jack T-shirt smeared with the legend: "My Home Too". However, she was also keen to point out that locating Echobelly solely in the world of gender and race politics dismissed their importance as a pop band.
