The name Sabri is the name given to members of a group of followers of Sufism, to which all the players belong (they are not blood relations as such). The group originally comprised Haji Ghuram Farid Sabri (b. India, d. 1994; vocals, harmonium), Haji Maqbool Ahmed Sabri (b. India; vocals, harmonium), Haji Kamal Sabri (b. India; vocals, chirya tarang), Mehmood Ghaznavi Sabri (b. India; vocals, bongo), Fazal Islam (b. India; chorus), Azmat Farad Sabri (b. India; chorus), Sarwat Farid (b. India; chorus), Javed Kamal Sabri (b. India; chorus), Haji Abdul Karim (b. India; dholak) and Hoji Mohammed Anwar (b. India; tabla). After moving to Pakistan in 1947, the brothers first sang with their father and uncle. In the mid-50s they formed their own group whose first album was released in 1959 to critical acclaim across Pakistan. The band is nowadays based in Karachi and still enjoy immense popularity in their homeland. Ya Habib (Oh Beloved) is a forthright expression of their devotional qawwali (sometimes alternately spelled "qawal") performances.
