My Dying Bride
From Bradford, Yorkshire, England, My Dying Bride proffer an intriguing blend of full-blooded doom metal, with more poise than most and a rare experimental streak. Vocalist Aaron Stainthorpe's (b. 12 November 1968, Germany) lyrics also depart somewhat from the herd - although he often concerns himself with biblical and religious matters, his stance is neither that of Christian or Satanist: "The Bible is a fantastic story...There's no heaven or hell as far as I'm concerned, it's just a nice story and I like to write about it because it affects so many people's lives." Stainthorpe formed the band in 1990 with Adrian Jackson (b. 12 June 1970; bass), Andrew Craighan (b. 18 July 1970), Calvin Robertshaw (guitar) and Rick Miah (drums). They secured a recording contract with French label Listenable, through whom they provided their first official release, the "God Is Alone" single. This was enough to interest UK label Peaceville, who released their debut EP, Symphonaire Infernus Et Spera Empyrium. Their 1992 album, As The Flower Withers, followed shortly afterwards, featuring artwork by popular cult artist Dave McKean. My Dying Bride were already making a name for themselves as innovators in the doom genre, with a sound that combined the morbid grind of death metal with orchestral flourishes and haunting refrains. The resultant effect was one of grandiose tragedy.
