Life of Agony
From Brooklyn, New York, USA, this quartet was formed in 1989 by Alan Robert Goldstein (bass) and cousins Keith Caputo (vocals) and Joseph Zampella aka Joey Z (guitar). They initially recruited Sal Abruscato on drums. Together, they began Life Of Agony as a simple hardcore act, propelled by flaring nostrils and flying sweat, until diminutive lead singer Caputo had singing lessons from vocal coach Don Lawrence (who had previously worked with Mick Jagger, Sebastian Bach from Skid Row and Jon Bon Jovi). The result was a much greater level of dexterity employed in both songwriting and execution by the band, with Goldstein operating as chief lyricist behind Caputo's powerful delivery. Playing on the road in support of Agnostic Front, Biohazard, Fear Factory, Mot”rhead, Corrosion Of Conformity and Obituary, their debut set for Roadrunner Records represented a conscious attempt to appeal to fans of more melodic metal (comparisons with Stone Temple Pilots were a feature of the critical response). Their second album was released in October 1995, an 11-track selection produced by Steve Thompson. Ex-Pro-Pain drummer Dan Richardson (b. Daniel Joseph Richardson) then replaced Abruscato on 1997's Soul Searching Sun.
