Sentenced
Bringing the dark tones of doom metal to their otherwise conventional death metal approach, Finland's Sentenced are known for the relentless miserablism of their songs. Formed in Oulu in 1989 by Miika Tenkula (b. 6 March 1974, Oulu, Finland; guitar), Sami Lopakka (b. 17 January 1975, Oulu, Finland; guitar) and Vesa Ranta (b. 20 July 1973, Oulu, Finland; drums), the founding members were joined by Taneli Jarva (b. Finland; bass/vocals) after their first demo. Their first releases were more traditional death metal in nature and prompted Century Media to sign them. It was not until the replacement of original vocalist Jarva by Ville Laihiala (b. 13 June 1973, Oulu, Finland) in 1996 that the band found themselves a truly independent style. New bass player Sami Kukkohovi (b. 26 April 1974, Oulu, Finland) made his debut alongside Laihiala on the same year's Down. Tours with the Gathering, My Dying Bride and Therion and international jaunts in Asia and South America kept the Sentenced flag flying, and they entered the new century as a fully developed doom death band, comparable in style to the earlier work of Anathema. Sentenced announced that the 2005 release The Funeral Album would be their last.
