Malevolent Creation
Formed in Buffalo, New York, USA, in 1987, it took Malevolent Creation four years to secure a contract and release their official debut for Roadrunner Records. This gore-fixated recording, The Ten Commandments, was mixed at Morrisound Studios in Florida by noted extreme metal producer Scott Burns, whose distinctive work had previously more or less defined the death metal sound. The band's line-up at this early stage in their career featured Brett Hoffman (vocals), Phil Fasciana (guitar), Jeff Juszkiewicz (guitar), Jason Blachowicz (bass/vocals), and Mark Simpson (drums). Malevolent Creation were initially considered an above average example of an often formulaic genre, and attracted a degree of critical acclaim. They arrived on the death metal scene too late, however, to establish themselves among the front-runners and as its popularity waned, the band found themselves without a contract. A number of line-up changes did not help, with Rob Barrett and Alex Marquez replacing Juszkiewicz and Simpson on 1992's Retribution, while Barrett was himself replaced by John Rubin on the follow-up Stillborn.
