Love/Hate
This Los Angeles, California-based quartet, formerly known as Data Clan, originally comprised Jizzy Pearl (lead vocals), Jon E. Love (guitar), Skid Rose (bass) and Joey Gold (drums). Proudly dubbing themselves the "stoopidest band in the world', the new name was first invoked in 1986. With a streetwise attitude and a highly talented frontman, their debut album, produced by Tom Werman, was released to widespread critical acclaim. A hybrid of Guns N'Roses and M”tley Cre, their songs dealt with the well-worn themes of sex, drugs, drink and rock 'n' roll. It was in a live setting that the band truly excelled, however, playing with genuine commitment and generating real intensity with their brand of funk-infused, jitterbug rock. The visual spectacle of a cross constructed from empty Budwiser cans also appealed. Wasted In America confirmed their fans" faith in them and recruited many new converts, but nevertheless saw them dropped by Columbia Records. They regrouped for Let's Rumble, with Love replaced by Darren Housholder, but by this point some of the earlier momentum, if not their native talent, had dispersed. I'm Not Happy was a prophetic title, with the band bereft of any new chords.
