Ann Peebles
If Al Green was the the reigning king of soul at Memphis-based Hi Records in the '70s, then labelmate Ann Peebles was the queen. Together with genius producer Willie Mitchell and his great studio band, Peebles crafted some of the most unforgettable and enduring creations of the 1970s. Her spare, haunting 1973 hit, "I Can't Stand the Rain," swiftly would become an oft-covered, oft-sampled soul standard.
