The Gloria Record
This Austin, Texas, USA-based indie rock band was formed in 1997 by Chris Simpson (guitar/vocals) and Jeremy Gomez (bass). The duo had previously been bandmates in the highly regarded emo (emotional hardcore) group Mineral, who disbanded shortly after completing work on their second album, EndSerenading. With the addition of Brian Hubbard (guitar) and Matt Hammon (drums), the Gloria Record made their recording debut in 1998 with the independently released, "Grace, The Snow Is Here". A well-received self-titled EP was then recorded before Ben Houtman (keyboards) was added to the line-up. Houtman's synth work helped flesh out the band's sound and marked a notable progression from Simpson and Gomez's work with Mineral, with the band's more organic approach earning comparisons to both Seam's "slowcore" sound and Radiohead's epic productions. A succession of personnel changes saw Hammon replaced by Jeremy Tappero and then Brian Malone, with the latter making his debut on the A Lull In Traffic EP, on which the debt to Radiohead became even more apparent. The quintet took two years to complete work on their first album, which was recorded sporadically without the financial backing of a label. A recording contract was eventually signed with the Arena Rock label, and Start Here was released in summer 2002.
