Beyond
Formed in Derby, England, in 1988, Beyond consisted of John Whitby (vocals), Andy Gatford (guitar), Jim Kersey (bass) and Neil Cooper (drums). Quickly gaining popularity on the live club circuit and obtaining a publishing contract with Island Music, they attracted the attention of EMI Records through some early demos. The band initially signed a year-long development arrangement with the label, during which time they released two singles on the small independent Big Cat Records label - the Manic Sound Picnic EP and the single "No Excuse", both released in 1990. The following year, the band released their first single for the EMI label, "One Step Too Far". This was quickly followed by "Empire" on the relaunched EMI subsidiary Harvest Records. Reminiscent of Jane's Addiction, Voivod and Faith No More, the band's debut album was well received by both the music press and the public. In support of the album they toured the UK and Europe with Living Colour, and an EP, Raging, was also added to the band's discography. However, low sales led to the termination of their contract with EMI, although all four members joined forces again in 1995 under the name Gorilla.
