DJ Food
As part of Coldcut's DJing angle on creating music, Jonathon Moore and Matt Black released a series of albums entitled Jazz Brakes, beginning in 1990 when they formed Ninja Tune Records, under the name DJ Food. Containing mainly funk and hip-hop instrumentals, often cut up with samples of bizarre dialogue, it was partly intended as material for mixing, remixing and producing. Volumes 4 and 5 (1993, 1994) were co-written with the producer PC (Patrick Carpenter) and developed the abstract hip-hop sound by incorporating shades of Latin, dub, techno, ambient, jungle and non-Western music. The two 12-inch records, Refried Food, in 1995, contained mixes by Autechre, Fila Brazilia and Ashley Beedle, among others, and were collected onto one album the following year. PC and Strictly (Kevin Foakes) became more involved on A Recipe For Disaster (1995), and later took over the reins, still with the assistance of Coldcut. DJ Food present live sets during which PC works with Strictly on four decks.
