Heavenly
After the break-up of Oxford, England's Talulah Gosh in 1988, Amelia Fletcher (b. 1 January 1966, London, England; vocals, guitar), Mathew Fletcher (b. 5 November 1970, London, England, d. 14 June 1996; drums) and Peter Momtchiloff (b. 10 March 1962, Weybridge, Surrey, England; guitar) re-formed in the summer of 1989, this time adopting the name Heavenly. The line-up was completed with the addition of the original Gosh bass player Robert Pursey (b. 27 May 1964, Chipping Sodbury, Avon, England). While retaining the upbeat musical outlook and, at times, some of the tweeness of the previous outfit, Heavenly displayed a tighter, more mature sound, particularly in Amelia Fletcher's lovelorn lyrics and Momtchiloff's guitar playing. Recording for Sarah Records, Heavenly's debut single in 1990, "I Fell In Love Last Night", was followed by "Our Love Is Heavenly". The debut mini-album, Heavenly Vs Satan, was a perfect statement from the group, highlighted by "Shallow" and "Stop Before You Say It". A good example of Amelia Fletcher's self-deprecating sense of humour was to found on the b-side, "Escort Crash On Marston Street (a reworking of the debut album's 'Wish Me Gone"). The group's line-up was enlarged in the summer of 1991 by the arrival of Cathy Rogers (b. 29 May 1968, Tatsfield, Surrey, England; keyboards, vocals) for the recording of Le Jardin De Heavenly. With the break-up of the Field Mice in 1991, Heavenly could now claim to be the Sarah label's greatest asset. Amelia Fletcher also recorded a one-off solo EP, Can You Keep A Secret, for the Fierce label in 1988. Mathew Fletcher was found hanged on 14 June 1996. (NB: Not to be confused with the prog rock band or the French power metal band, both of the same name.)
