H.P. Lovecraft
This imaginative band was formed in Chicago, Illinois, USA, by George Edwards (guitar/vocals) and David Michaels (keyboards/woodwind/vocals). They made their debut in 1967 with a folk rock reading of "Anyway That You Want Me', a Chip Taylor composition successfully revived by the Troggs. The duo was initially backed by a local outfit, the Rovin" Kind, until Tony Cavallari (lead guitar), Jerry McGeorge (bass, ex-Shadows Of Knight) and Michael Tegza (drums) completed the new venture's line-up. Their debut album, H.P. Lovecraft, fused haunting, folk-based material with graphic contemporary compositions. It featured stirring renditions of "Wayfaring Stranger" and "Let's Get Together", but the highlight was "The White Ship", a mesmerizing adaptation of a short story penned by the author from whom the quintet took its name.
