Big Bub
b. Frederick Lee Drakeford, New Jersey, USA. Big Bub resumed his solo career in 1997 after spending several years as a successful soul and R&B producer for artists including Mary J. Blige, Boy George, Keith Sweat, BLACKstreet and Bobby Brown. He first built his reputation in the late 80s as a member of Today, a band who, with the help of Teddy Riley, were pivotal in the development of "new jack swing" (aka swingbeat). His debut solo album followed in 1992, and is best remembered for the inclusion of the single "Tellin' Me Stories", a song discussing the problems of coping with a drug-addicted girlfriend, at a time when matters of conscience were not uppermost in the minds of most R&B songwriters. Afterwards, Drakeford concentrated on production and writing, his biggest successes including a co-writing credit for Bobby Brown's "My Prerogative", and material for Heavy D, Johnny Gill, Horace Brown and others. After a brief stint as an A&R director for Motown Records, he elected to enter the fray as a solo artist once again. His second album, Timeless, saw him reunited with producer Teddy Riley, while lead-off single "Need Your Love" featured rappers Heavy D and Queen Latifah. Also included was an update of the Commodores' "Zoom", which featured on the soundtrack to Hoodlum.
