Fairuz
b. Nuhad Haddad, 21 November 1935, Beirut, Lebanon. Fairuz began her musical career in 1947 when, having been discovered singing at a school party, she was invited to join a choir formed to perform national hymns on Lebanese radio. She studied singing and music at the Conservatoire National du Liban and on the completion of her studies, sang solo on national radio. Through these performances she became a star in her own country. In the 50s she began working with renowned local composers and arrangers, brothers Mansour and Asi Rahbani, marrying Asi in 1954. The combination of Fairuz's darkly passionate voice with the Rahbani's innovative arrangements (which mixed traditional Arabic instrumentation with western-style orchestral strings) and memorable songs proved phenomenally popular throughout the Middle East, and made Fairuz a cultural icon for Arabs all over the world. The partnership continued for decades, with the Rahbani brothers also writing a series of hit musical films in which Fairuz appeared. The 1997 recording The Legendary Fairuz features a selection of her most famous songs performed with full orchestral backing in various Arab countries.
