CIV
Formed in New York City in 1994, CIV (pronounced "sieve" - also the name of the band's singer and leader, Anthony Civocelli) are one of the new generation of hardcore outfits from the city. With a line-up completed by Sam Siegler (drums), Charlie Garriga (guitar) and Arthur Smilios (bass), the band took that particular scene by storm with their 1995 debut album, Set Your Goals. Their stage performances were also eye-catching, the band favouring sharp suits rather than the army surplus more usually associated with the hardcore fraternity, while the accent on percussion saw them labelled by some as a hardcore version of Adam And The Ants. Each member had previously played with other local bands, most notably Gorilla Biscuits and Youth Of Today. CIV were signed by Atlantic Records when A&R executive Mike Gitter saw their self-funded "demo video" for "Wait One Minute More". This featured a chat show parody and was regularly aired by MTV. After signing to Atlantic the band consolidated their progress with support dates to L7, Sick Of It All and others. In 1996, they toured the UK for the first time and released another acclaimed single, "Choices Made". Smilios was replaced by Cache Tolman in March 1998, prior to the release of Thirteen Day Getaway.
