United Future Organization
A trio of former DJs, numbering French-raised Raphael Sebbag (b. Morocco) and Japanese personnel Tadashi Yabe and Toshio Matsuura, based in Japan, whose warm, breezy and highly enjoyable conflagration of acid jazz, hip-hop, Latin and club sounds has endeared them to an international audience. The trio first came together in 1990 as a production team involved in staging fashion and art promotions. The singles "I Love My Baby (My Baby Loves Jazz)" and "Loud Minority' were followed by Jazzin' 91-92. Talkin" Loud Records boss Gilles Peterson signed the trio and used them to launch his new UK label, Brownswood. The idea was to contrast natural elements in urban settings, though the label was actually named after his "local". Their self-titled debut for the label featured contributions from Galliano and MC Solaar, plus jazz luminaries Jon Hendricks and Japanese talent like singer Monday Michiru. As part of their Brownswood/Phonogram contract, they were invited to supervise the Japanese club compilation Multi Direction. Their second album for Brownswood featured another stellar guest list, including Mark Murphy, Cleveland Watkiss, DJ Krush, while the title provided an apt description for the thrillingly eclectic sounds within. The mellow 3rd Perspective was conceived as a fictitious soundtrack and included "The Planet Plan", a track originally intended to feature on the soundtrack to Mission Impossible. A fourth album, Bon Voyage, followed in May 1999. Sebbag, Yabe and Matsuura have also individually compiled and produced albums for the Mercury Music Entertainment series.
