Ronny Jordan
b. 29 November 1962, London, England. Described by some as "the quintessential acid-jazz guitarist", Jordan has an intimate and readily accessible musical demeanour which has endeared him to many. By the mid-90s he had disassociated himself with the acid-jazz movement, commenting that "the way I see acid-jazz, it's more of a fashion statement and I'm not really about that". Nevertheless, the high profile of the genre had served him well. After signing to Island Records subsidiary 4th & Broadway Records in 1991, Jordan released two acclaimed albums and participated in a number of collaborative projects. He also enjoyed a UK Top 40 chart hit in 1992 with a funked up cover version of Miles Davis' "So What". His 1996 release Light To Dark was a more restrained, mature collection, designed to appeal to jazz purists for the first time. A link with the past was maintained in its rhythms - Jordan favouring pummelling beats informed by a love of good hip-hop - while the melodies belonged to an earlier era. "It's You", the first single to be taken from the album, typified this marriage of the new and the old.
