P.M. Dawn
This hip-hop act, who enjoyed huge crossover success in the early 90s, was formed by brothers Prince Be (b. Attrell Cordes, 15 May 1970) and DJ Minute Mix (b. Jarrett Cordes, 17 July 1971). Hailing from Jersey City, New Jersey (their step-father was a member of Kool And The Gang), their backgrounds were shrouded in tragedy. Their real father died of pneumonia when they were children, and their brother Duncan drowned when he was two years old. They came from a highly musical family - 10 of their aunts and uncles were rappers and DJs in the genre's early days in the 70s, when Prince Be started rapping as a youngster at family parties. They were equally influenced by 60s pop and duly incorporated harmonies in their work - hence the later tag, Daisy Age Soul. They cut demos in 1989, including their first song, "Check The Logic", at a Long Island studio. After signing to Gee Street Records, they took the name P.M. Dawn, indicating "the transition from dark to light". A debut single, "Ode To A Forgetful Mind", was released in January 1991. Its follow-up, "A Watcher's Point Of View", broke into the UK Top 40, introducing their melodic hip-hop to a larger audience.
