Gonzalo Rubalcaba
b. 27 May 1963, Havana, Cuba. Rubalcaba's grandfather, Jacobo, was a danzon composer, and his father, Guillermo, a pianist. Playing piano from a very early age, Gonzalo took lessons from the age of eight and then studied classical music at Havana Institute of Fine Arts, where he earned a degree in music composition. He became a professional musician, forming Grupo Proyecto, and from 1980 he toured extensively, visiting Europe and Africa, sometimes as a member of the Orquestra Arag¢n and also with his own band. He worked with Dizzy Gillespie when he visited Cuba in 1985 and the following year Charlie Haden and Rubalcaba met while performing at the Havana Jazz Festival. Haden later invited Rubalcaba to participate in a session with himself and Paul Motian at the 1989 Montreal Jazz Festival.
