The Bouncing Souls
Of the multitude of pop punk bands that emerged during the 90s, the majority seemed to come from the west coast of the USA, but there was a number of east coast counterparts during this era, such as the New Brunswick, New Jersey-based Bouncing Souls. The band has been going strong in one form or another since 1989, when Greg Attonitoi (vocals), Pete Steinkopf (guitar), Bryan Kienlen (bass) and Shal Khichi (drums) first got together as a live unit. It was during the Bouncing Souls' early years that they built a following by playing at their own organized house parties, as well as the more traditional, local punk venues. After a debut EP, Ugly Bill, was issued in 1991, the Bouncing Souls opted to form their own indie record label, Chunksaah (named after a friend, Tim Chunks, who lent them money to get the label off the ground), on which they issued three further EPs, and The Good, The Bad, And The Argyle. When the band returned home from their first full US tour in support of the album, it was decided it was time to move from their long-time home base, as half the band relocated to Hoboken, New Jersey while the other half moved to New York. The band's second album, Maniacal Laughter, followed in 1995, as they spent the better part of the ensuing year on the road opening for the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, No FX, and the Descendents, in addition to headlining.
